with a dagger. This was taken from the latter's body after he had been removed to the French Hospital. Another man who was present whan the assault took place, was not yet in custody.
Sub-Inspector Cockle asked for a formal remand, intimating that the Crown Solicitor had been instructed to appear.
Mr. A. E. Hall, appearing for both prisoners, baked that bail be granted, the amount to bé decided upon by his Worship. His case would be quite simple... It would be an alibi.
The Magistrate referrod this matter to the C.S.P. and fixed a formal week's remand, until August 7th.
KIDNAPPING CASES.
Search for Missing Boy.
The case in which three men are charged with being concerned in the kidnapping of a small boy and smuggling him scross, the border into the country was given a further week's remand by Mr. C. D. Melbourne, at the Police Court this morning.
In making this application. Inspector Reynolds said that they were hopeful of gotting the boy back by means of the payment of the sum demanded by a fourth man who still retained possession of the boy. With a view to bring- ing this about, the uncle of the | boy was setting about getting the
extra eum demanded, and when. this
had been handed over, the boy would be returned to Hongkong in time for the Case to be proceeded with on the date asked for... The application was granted.
This somewhat unusual pro... cedure had to be taken by the focal police, it was later explained, in order to secure the co-operation of the Canton Police. In the.. past, it was denial to apply to the Chief of Police at Shumchun for aid in cases which required the presence of the Hongkong police on the other side of the border. It has been ascertained that the kidnapped boy had been taken as far as Ng Sbing, and is now OD. his way to Waichow. It ́ wer necessary that before he reached. this destination the kidnappers should be got in touch with. This the uncle of the boy is now trying his utmost to do.
Father Recovers Son.. How the father of a twelve- year-old lad who was kidnapped from his home at Shaukiwan started investigations on his own account, and eventually succeeded
recovering his child, wƐs- related in a case brought before the notice of the Yaumiti Police yesterday.
ip
The son of a abookeeper, at Shaukiwan was missed from bis home about a week ago, and the anxious father bethought himself that the kidnappers would try to make for the border. He had the various railway stations watched. and went to Yaumati himself to look for the boy. After several days patient eff cte, he traced the boy to house in Reclamation. Street, took him away and report- ed his discovery to the police. Officers were sent to the house where they made the arrest offi man, who is now held on a charge. of kidnapping.
