LAWN BOWLS.
Taikoo's New Green Opened.
Lawn bowl enthusiasts went in large numbers to Quarry Bay on Saturday afternoon, when the new bowling green of the Taikoo Recreation Club was officially opened by Mr. G. T. Edkink, Chief Manager of Messrs. Rutterfield and Swire. The erection of new houses for the staff necessitated the giving up of the old green, upon which many keen contests have taken place, but a new site was found on the Club's former garden just above the Clubhouse. Here a pavilion is to be erected later. The now green is ad- mirably situated. In addition to representatives of various Clube, the Hon. Mr. A. G. Stephen, Chairman of the Lawn Bowls Association, at- lended, as well as other bowls officials Hospitality was ex- tended in the liberal mannar for which Taikoo is noted, and during the afternoon interesting rink contests took place. Speeches ppropriate to the occasion were delivered by Mr A. Hamilton, Chairman of the Club, and by Mr.
Edkins.
Before asking Mr. Edkins to perform the opening ceremony Mr.A. Hamilton (Cuairman of the Taikoo Recreation Club) expressed bis pleasure at seeing so many friends present. Must of them, he thought, were aware that, owing to the increasing demand for build ing sites, they had very reluctantly to give up the old bowling green, but fortunately they were employ. ed by a firm which recognised the necessity of providing recrea- tion
facilitie Jor its staff. A... new recreation ground had been provided and the work entailed in laying out. the new bowling green and tennis court could only be appreciated by those who had been engaged upon it. On the old ground the Club | had been fortunate in securing the League Cup on several occasions; also winning the Singles Champion- ship of the Colony and twice defeating the Shanghai team ic interport matches. He hoped the Club would do as well on the new green s on the old one. Before asking you to open this new green. said the Chairman, addressing Mr. Edkins, I would like to thank you and our Vice President, who have been instrumental in getting this new recreation ground, which. I assure you, we appreciate very much. I should also like to say how much we appreciate the work of those/whose task it has been to superintend generally the work, which has been very extensive.
