News for the China Station
One of the oldest items in tha seamen's dietary may disappear is the result of a new Admiralty Forder. It has been represented
that salt pork is not appreciated. as a ration on certain foreign stations, and, further, that its iraus to ships in the tropics in undesirable for dietetio resSONS. Arrangements are therefore being made for tins of west and veget able ration, auch an now used an un extra issue in the Submarine Service, to be sent to the victual- ling yards at Hongtong, Bombay, the Cape, and Barmuda. Each yard will issue them for trial alternately with “preserved meat and accompaniments,” as « anbi stitute for the ration of salt pork, split peas, and celery seed, when fresh meat is not available. Re ports are to be forwarded as soon as practicable to the Director of Victualling, stating whether the substitution of the meat and vegetable ration for salt perk is recommended as "a permanent measure.
