TO-DAY'S MISCELLANY.

A curious explanation given at`a Llanelly inquest of. many deathsamong soldiers in the early part of the war. Giving ovidence regarding the death of a gardener, George Morgan, a doctor said the man had contract- led a virulent poison from highly- cultivated soil with which he was working. The Llanelly gardenèr got a thorn in his thumb, and ex- tracted it himself. An operation became necessary, and death took place from reptioaomia (blood poisoning), following the injury to the thumb, and caused through it coming into contact with rich soil..

"The Beggar's Opers," which bas passed its 1,000th perform- sace at the Lyric, Hammersmith, this evening, had the distinction of introducing Peg Woffington to the public. In 1729 London went mad over Gay's masterpiece, and so great was the rage for the play that it was noted by children, and

me. Violante organised a troupe of Liliputian players for the Irish playpoer. Madame displayed rara discrimination in choosing the cast. Peg Wuffington, aged 10 or 11, played Polly, and saveral of her other players became dis- tinguished actors on the Irish and English boards. Peg. bow- jever, shone above all her rivals, and four years later she was play fing Ophelia at the Dublin Theatre

Royal.
