Senator Newberry resigned on November 19, on the ground that the defeat of his Republican colleague at the recent election would make his continued service futile as he would be "continually hampered by partisan political persecution."

There was some heated argu- ment at the Magistracy yesterday afternoon. Mr. H. L. Dennys, de fending solicitor, applied for the the discharge of his client on grund that the police, the Govern ment and the prosecuting solicitor had no objections; but the Magis- trate refused.
The accused in the case is Wen Ko, a painting contractor. He is alleged to have shot a man in a tea house some time ag. There were two charges against him. one of them for attempted murder.
