The cross value of the trade of Soochow for 1921 amounted to HE. TIs. 19.389,974. being ineresse of HET. 1,055,166 as compared with 1920. This in- crrase in value is accounted for mainly by foreign imports, both direct and coastwise, and aount- ed to Ht.Th. 1,341,557. Chinese imporis showed an Increase in value of Hk. The latter crop averag ed only 45 per cent. The price of rice during 1921 varied from $7 to $10 per shih. The encoon season, too, showed a decrease, only averaging 60 per cent. The market opened on the 25th. Mar and prices ran from $50 to $10 per picul. An influx of famine refugees from north of the Yang ize appeared in January and November, hoping to find work in local factories. A few of the refugees suceeded in their quest. but the great majority were unaaccessful and were "mored on" by the territorial officials as undesirables. In April a variety enter'ainment was held in the Lin Yuan under the sa-pices of Chinese and Foreign Relief Soc ety, when some $5,000 BS realised.
