Nomura, a leading banker of Osaka, saya that a short-lived boom may be experienced in the near future in Japan, to be followed by a big. alorip and possibly by a financial panic. The three factors which indicate this development are a strong tendency of supply exceed" ing demand; lack of barmODY in the financial market. and a shrinkage in the margin of profit without an apparent prospect of early recovery, Mr. Nomura already sees indications of the false boom.
ADVANTAGES OF THERMIT WELDING.
The progress of welding bas been retarded considerably, ac- cording to a statement made by the-Metal-&-Thermit-Corpora tion, New York, owing to the fact that when a weld is made it is im- possible to determine without-de- stroying it what strength is de- finitely assured and safe to allow. an examination of the surface of welds does not reveal this. It is on this account that certain well- known technical societies and as- sadiations interested in the pos sibilities of welding have greatly restricted the allowable applica- tion. A Thermit wald, however, by reason of its coltar is the only method which allows a careful in- spection and permits the drawing of proper conclusions, as to the strength of welds. Ja Thermit welding it is impossible to have such defects as lack of fusion (if the proper amount of thermit bas been used and instructions have been carefully followed), as oxide Inclusions, such as those förmed during the adding of metal in the.. case of other methods. Unclean. surfaces, oxide inclusions (due, : for example, to failure to proper- (^- clean scale from wrought iron sectides before welding) have b way resulted in Thermit welding in only one type of defect, Le', blow holes. This defect, due to natural tendency of the gases to [rise in the molten mass, if preser
at all, will always be present in the thermit steer collars, and sti examination intercally of ta collar can be made without affer t ing the strength of the weld. Thus the unsound welds can be found and condemned. In practice, this examination is made by googing deep grooves in the thermit atami coltars parallel with the axis of the piece, these grooved reaching slmost to the original section it- self. Two euch grooves on the four sides of Thermit weld have been found to be sufficient. If these grooves are observed to be free ad clean from blow hole de- fects, the inspector
may be absolutely assured that the weld itself is sound.
