UNITED STATES.
The coal atrite in the United States, which started on April 1st, still continues, but according to the latest reports to hand the outlook for settlement is much better. Competent judges of the situation said the strike had to come, and that it would last ifrom two to three months. The drastic reduations made by the Britial coalmine owners no doubt did much to bring about the reduced scale of wages, writes a correspondent in the Liverpool Journal of Corgmetes. When the strike started large stocks of coal were held above ground in the States, but supplies are now getting short. Last weak a cargo of 4,000 tons was find from the Forth to St. John, NB. and for this business s 6d with free despatch was paid. That was followed by further inquiries, and late in the week more came along from the States, resulting in the sale of a cargo of Northumber- land steam coal for prompt ship- ment to American ports. It is suggested that this will be follow- ed by further business, but of course there are several diffi- culties in the way. Welsh coal recently sold to San Francisco, and there is no reason why British exporters should not com- pete with American mineowners on their own ground, so to speak, although in this connection it should not be forgotten that YORK, the strike in the States and the

British steamets at this time of the year are going across to the States and also the Canadian ports to fill engagements to load grain, and such vessels could easily take coal at 7s. 63. tp 89. 6d. per ton, which would be about ine market rate of freight. British coal for bunkering purposes could compele just now with American coal in such ports as New York, Philadelphia, &c., but coal for in- dustrial and domestic purposes is quite another mater. The in- quiry seemed to be developing over the week-end, and there was more demand for carrying space.. with a little business for early shipment. A foll cargo of British pig iron will shartly be shipped from Middlesbrough to New York. This is an interesting event, and if it is followed by further ship- ments of the same commodity and also coal to the same destina- tion is would not be surprising
