It was decided to delete Clause 1, which declared that the provision of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894 (which relates to, forfeiture of the wages of a seaman when incapacitated by illness caused by his own default) is not to apply in any case where the ill- ness causing the incapacity is venereal dise, but it WAS agreed that the whipowner should' accept responsibility for landing men at a foreign port and for repatriation. the serious stention of ship- owners and engineers, were fully discussed at a recent meeting of the Liverpool Engineering Society. Mr. Storry B. Freeman contribut- ed a paper entitled "Some Re- marks on Turbine Gearing," and this with the discussion which followed, was very helpful to some. of the matters upon which jelacidation is desirable. The

author attached very consider- sable importance to the material used in the various parta of the gearing. Be remarked that cash steel rims seem to have gone quite out of favour. The most common defects so far exper- ienced in forged steel have been finadequate best, treatment and [slag inclusions. Examination of very large number of test pieces showed, be said, a largo percentage to have been.. taken from fagings which sub sequently, had been overhested and which had not been normally- ed and then spealed, and were consequently in dacgerously brittle condition. Blagioclastpos. due to the pouring of steel at too low temperatures, Matzing segregation of carbon phosphorus or, sulphur, have frequently been met with. In the case of certain teeth, eliz inclusions appeared at the beginning of those cracks which ultimately extended, and finally caused the destruction. of the gearing.
