GERMAN FINANCIAL CRISIS.

London, July 10

The papers generally voice alarm at the oritical situation in Central Europe as redacted by the collapse of the German Mark, which is now worth less than a tenth of a penny, instead of the Formal shilling. Important oficial communications are stated to be passing between London, Paris, Washington and Berlin. # Is thought that in some quarters German bankruptcy is imminent. While some views favour assisting Germany in order to prevent financial disaster, others are of opinion that the situation will never be finally relieved until Germany has passed actual national in- solvency, and that outside help with the object of staving this off is uselesa.

The Diplomatic correspondent of the Day Telegraph Fası that grave anxiety is felt in British efreles with reference to the German financial crisis. A Cabinet Committee is at present con- aldaring the matter which will be discussed by the full Cabinet probably to-morrow. It is difficult to see how, failing a Supreme Council, an early meeting of the Allied Finance Ministers and Reparation experts can be avoided. It might be deemed advisable to invite the collaboration of other signstory Powers to the Ver- Bailles Treaty than those generally represented by the Suprema Council The Times, commenting on the sitúafign,” says that it is high time for British and France to take gobep and earnest counsel together in order that some barrier may be raised against the gathering menace to the fruits" of their common victory.

THE IRISH SITUATION.

London, July 10.

The Free Staters are swiftly rounding up the rebels in the provinces. Resistance is collapsing in all quarters. The towns- people of Wexford town welcomed the entry of the Nationals with bands and torches. The Nationals' humane methods are impress- ing public opinion in Ireland, which is rallying to the side of the Free State, whilst resentment appears to be growing against De Valera. The Provisional Government's 'determination to hold the Tail Teann games on 5th August at which thirty thousand visitors from all over the world are expected is considered to be the best proof of the optimistic view of the situation.

The funeral of Cathal Brugha will take place in Dublin to-day. De Valera might attend. If so be will probably be arrested.

The Irregular Headquarters have apparently been transferred from Mallow to Limerick.

AUSTRALIA AND THE COTTON TRADE.

London, July 10.

In Melbourne Australians are just beginning to realise the Lord enormous possibilities of cotton production in Australia, Forster, the Governor-General, in a speech said that Great Britain spent £200,000,000 yearly on raw cotton and he saw no reason why a large proportion thereof should not be spent in Australia. Aus- tralia imported £10,000,000 worth of cotton-goods but he saw no New Premises at No. 16 A Des reason why Australia should not manufacture all the cotton goods

In Queensland experiments had shown that cotton could be grown and in every state in the Commonwealth the quality of Australian cotton was from 25 to 50 per centum better than American. The yield per acre in Queensland considerably exceeded the American yield.
