The hearing was concluded at the Magistracy yesterday after- noon of the case in which a young Chinese woman, of the well-to-do class, was charged with assaulting her four-year old daughter.
In the evidence it W33 stated that Chief Inspector Kerk, who instigated the proceedings and whose quarters commanded 3 clear view of the girl's house in Wyndham Street, saw the defen-) dant beat her daughter about tilla time on the 27th nit. Mrs. Kerr. saw the little girl receive another thrashing later in the afternoon. The defendant admitted chastising her child, but said that she did so because the girl was trying to drink a mixture of hair gum, Chinese sauce and medicine.
Yesterday afternoon Dr. D. J. Valentine, who examined the girl] when she was admitted to the Government Civil Hospital, asid that the child had marks on her body of having been recently caned. There were also marks an back and both legs, from the hip down to the arkle, the right leg was in a worse condition than the laft.
