INTERVIEW

WITH SUN YAT-SEN.

Treachery Alleged Against Friends.

"I Will Not Resign.”

"Will Stake My Life for

Righteousness

Canton, Friday afternoon.

I have just returned from Whampoa, where, in com- pany with Miss Edna Lee Booker, correspondent of the International News Sarvice of New York. I had an inter- view with Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The support that Sun is mi present receiving from the Navy is undoubtedly much stronger than current reports would lead ons to believe.

Dr. Sun, who appeared to be quite cheerful throughout the whole of the interview, received us very courteously, and during the conversation said:

"I suppose you know the situation myself."

as well as I do.

We painted out that we had heard many rumours, and that the situation, so far as he was concerned, was by no means clear.

"I fell into a trap of treachery,” replied Dr. Sun, 'sat by my subordinates and my supposed friends. As a patriot and a man who wast set an example to the future of Chios, I am not going to submit to force. I hive' worked, and always will work, to put a stop to militarism. I wil always be prepared to submit to reasen and i sas prepared to stake my life for righteousmem. Might cannot climb over Right." I am willing to give my lie to stop force and coercion and would give my life nat only for China but for the world. When anyone begins to use force it is a loss to civilization."'

1.

Proceeding, the "Presidual” said :—“The Navy is still loyal to me. After six years of fighting the Peking notorieties bare now admitted that they were 00 wrong side. They have decided to recnavene Parliament and to bring about the ratification of the Constitution.

"But they want to reap all the advantages and elimi nate us, who have fought for so long for these things: They want to reap the fruits of all our work. I am fighting for humanity, civilization, Republicanism and right- cousness,"

"I believe that Chan King-ming gaye the orders which caused the firing on Friday morning. I never expected my friend to go against'rae. I was prepared against the enemy, but not against the treachery of a friend and a subordinate. I do not believe that his soldiers think they are fighting for the good of their country."

"As soon as they got me out of the City, they began lootlag. Looting, fighting, raping and killing are going on. You may expose that to the world,'

.c

Bow

"I bad a very narrow escape from my Palace, which was surrounded by soldiers. I was afraid for the safety of Mrs. Son if we both tried to escape together. We might both have been killed. So I went out by myself a few minutes before the firing began, intending to send back for her but circumstances prevented. Many of my bodyguards were killed. The 400 guards in the Presidency fough: well-fought for a night and 2 day. Mrs. Son bad a very narrow escape and her life was saved only through the loyalty of ber bodyguards. I was not prepared for any attack then, and it took a day and a half for the Navy to be got ready for action."

"The bombardment of Canton was my protest against the events of the night before, and the upholding of right. eousness."

"The shock of all this trouble bas caused the illness and death of Dr. Wu Ting-fang. He could no; recover from the shock of such treachery."

1

"I have not resigned and I will ant resign to force. can only band in my resignation should I wish to do so, to the Parliament which elected me; not to my sub- ordinates."

Asked if it were not true that the majority of the officers and men of the Navy had seceded from him, Dr. Sua replied that he did not know of it and had had no information to that effect. He had no doubts whatever as to the loyalty of the Navy to him and his cause.

Here the interview was brought to a close. This took place on board the "Wingfung "and whilst on board I met Mr. Norman, who is adviser to Dr. Sun. He told me that the President was always very frank in his statements, even when they might be against his own intereste. It might be wiser if he were more guarded in the expression of his views during the present crisis, but from what he (Mr. Norman) know of the President he was a man given to fair dealing.

In conversation with the Commander of the "Wing- fang" whilst being shown around the gunbast, I was inform ed by the officer that the Navy expected to be in action again" during the course of the next few days when General Hou Sung-chi enters Canton with his forces from the North.

-:1 was also informed that Sun Yaten does not remain on one ship, but moves from ons vessel to another, a report which shows that be is not confined to any one steamer as 1 prisoner, 'as has been suggested.
