SIR HENRY WILSON'S ASSASSINATION.

Landon, June 23

The universal horror and detestation-evoked by the murder of Sir Henry Wilson expressed in this morning's editorials, is coupled with the highest tributes to the deceased, the bravery of the palicemen and grave anxiety regarding reaction in Ireland whare, it is feared, the crime will tend to widen the chasm be tween North and South and evoke reprisals in Belfast. The crime seems good reason has dismayed and depressed Dublin. There

to believe that Sir Henry Wilson "died with his sword in his hand, having drawn it when the first shot was fred. The weapon was found out of the scabbard. The authorities are considering the advisability of arming the lendon police. The wounded men, con- trary to previous report, are all doing well.

The Chief of Staff of the 1. R. A. Regulars has denied that the murder of Sir Henry Wilson was the work of the 1. 2. A.

Detectives in motor cars made a series of raids in suspected Sinn Fein quarters in London last night and sized quantities of firearms and bombs. No arresta were made.

The police raids last night bave resulted in a conference between the Premier. Mr. Shortt, Mr. Chamberlain and Scotland Yard,om- cials. The corference will be resumed this morning.

тел. were charged at Connolly and O'Brien, the arrested Westminster Police Court with the murder of Sir Henry Wilson and were remanded.

Crowds packed the street outside Westminster Police Court long before the Court opened. The public was rigorously excluded,

Connolly and O'Brien were brought in a taxicab with drawn curtains, strongly guarded, two officers being inside and another beside the driver. all, armed and prepared for any even- tuality. The prisoners were rushed in the back entrance and ap- peared in the dock with thick bloodstained bandages round their heads. Their demeanour was defant.

The proceedings at the Werminster Police Court were short. The prosecutor, Mr. Travers Humphreys, said no time would be lost in bringing to justice the perpetrators of the ios and detest- able murder. It would probably be necessary to ask the Court to withhold the name and addresses of witnesses and prohibit photo- xraphing. A Police Inspector to t:fed that when charged at the Police Station neither prisoner replied, but Cunɔlly later asked "How are the other chaps which were shot?" When told they were progressing favourably both salleg were giac to hear it. They were remanded for a week.

There was an unusually large attendance in the House of Commons owing to the expectation of further developments in con- nection with the assassination of Sir Henry Wilson. The Premier was absent. Replying to complaints thereanent, Dr Chamberlain explained that Mr. Lloyd George wa- conferring with the police authorities with regard to future steps. Startling statements and interesting disclosures were made in the curse of a half hour's bombardment of Mr. Chamberlain with questions, mostly by "Die- hards. Mr. Chamberlain, replying, said every possible step would be taken to protect the lives of British subjects in Ireland and here. He announced that the Irish delate would be held on Monday when the Government would give information which could pro- perly be published.

Mr. Chamberlain stated that owing to the belief that the Irish withdrawn from position had improved police. protection was micisters and others, except the Chief Secretary, a month ago on the advice of Scotland Yard. He declined to state whether the Provisional Government had been asked to trace the antecedents of the alleged assassins and to arrest the leaders of the Irish Re publican, Brotherhood. The police were not armed at their ow request, bat a conference to reconsider the question of arming was being held.

information

Mr. Shortt, in reply to a question, said that no had been received with regard to any threats to assassinate Sir Henry Wilson. Major Arche Shre declared he had seen a letter to Scotland Yard about Sir Henry Wilson and indignantly called upon Mr. Shortt to resign. All questions to the Government were marked by deep indignation at what apparently is regarded as the supineness of the authorities. The debate on Monday may be of considerable political importance.

Mr. Chamberlain stated that as the result of numerous police raids last night, following the asperitation of Sir Henry Wilson, fifteen men and one wordan were detained. Some cendiary obes were discovered.

Marshal Foch has telegraphed his sympathy to the family. He will attend the funeral. M. Millerand and M. Pincare have also telegraphed sympathy.
