REFRIGERATOR SHIPS..

The use of refrigerator ships in large numbers to carry apples to the markets of the world will be given special attention at the cobvention of the International Apple Shippers' Association to be held in Seattle July 26 to 29. It is the first time in the history of the association that it has over held a convention west of Mil- waukee. Between six and eight hundred shippers are expected to attend the meeting and to visit the apple districts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Washington during 1921 raised 52 per cent. of

WIRELESS DIRECTION-FINDER.

Once again the wireless direction-finder has proved the means of rescuing lives at sea, in this case a Norwegian vessel coming to the assistance of a British steamer in distress. The latter, the Olta, was disabled north of the Shetland Island and sent out wireless calls for assis tance. These were picked up st Bergen. whence the salvage steamer Jason was sent to the rescue, and also by the Stavan- gefjord, bound out of Christiania. The Norwegian ship proceeded to the position indicated by the Otta, but found no trace of her. The weather made it impossible for observations to be taken, so the direction-flader was employ- ed, and the disabled vessel was faned to be 60 miles away. Mean- while, however, the Jason was also steering.a wrong course, so the Stavangefjord stood by and piloted her to the right place by repeated directional observations. SHANGHAI FREIGHTS. Messrs.
