This, as well as other details, had caused a great deal of pessimism in the minds of superintendents as to the advisability of coo- tinuing the making of this type of augins for regular sea- going purposes, and many owners had turned towards the internat This was combustion engine. still in its experimental stage, but ho had no doubt it would, at least for vessels running up to 14 or 15 knots, gradually replace the tur- bine drive as well as the reci procating engine, although it had still very high initial cost. The whole question of propulsion was causing much concern to shipowners and shipbuilders, and many companies had come to the conclusion that the day of the reciprocating engine was past. were adhering to that type, especially 83 its first cost was relatively low, and they might now have a free choice of either coal or oil as fuel. The reciprocating engine, with the old type of Scotch boiler. had done great service in, ship propulsion. The design of the engine, with its cylinder proportious, etc., gave a very high degree of efficiency and economy, but turbines were now in almost universal use in high-

introduction of gearing in the better-class cargo bosts was a further development. All this might have been said by a07 shipbuilder or marine engineer 12 months. within the past bal there has bean general inclination to allow the frival systems of propellick ma- chinery to develop farther before

opinions. There is no doubt, however, that the outlook with regard to ma- chinery is very uncertain, and that desiguers of ships and engines are frequently puzzled as to the type of engine which they should adopt. If there were a great demand for new vessels, risks would, no doubi, be taken, but at present all concerned are gcing slow, and are trying to learn by their own experience and what they can pick up about the experience of their neighbours and competitors.
