The Shanghai line is thought of most seriously by the N.Y.K.. and next come the coastwise lines. As ocean ray- vices are indefinite in business results and are now scutaly de- pressed, the N.Y.K. is said to bave decided to concentrate its energies upon the coastwise and pear-ERR lines, and offering only the pesac seivices for amalgamation. AMERICAN MARINE INBURANCE,
In the course of a retrospect of the American marine insurance business during 1921, the Marine Journal considers that the year proved less disastrous than most underwriters had anticipated, but Įstatós that practically no profits were made. The main reason given is the decrease in the value of the foreign trade of New York by three billion dollars, brought sbout by the unsettled dordition of domestic and overseas markets, which caused the withdrawal from the market of a large amount of exports and Importa which would otherwise have been insur- ed. Although the loss to under- writers from theft and pilferage during 1921 was far below that of the previous year, the izäbility of shippers to make deliveries at foreign parts owing to strikar and other labour disorders, when the shipper demanded payment from the marine Insurance companies, bad a bad effect on the market, whilst the reduction premium io- come through reduced abip values and the withdrawal of a large percentage of ocean tonnage also |brought about considerable losses. The general opinion in United States insurance circles is ther the success of the present year depends mainly on the elimina- tion of a number of small concas which base sprung up willin the last five years, and through blanders and bad business, berp placed a stigma on the under- writing business."
