EARLIER TELEGRAMS,

- THE IRISH SITUATION,

London, April 17.

A message from Carrick-on-Shannon says that Mr. Arthur Griffith has defled the Irish Republican's anti-Treaty proclamation mentioned on April 8th, prohibiting pablic meetings to be held at Sligo Guarded by armoured cars and Free State troops Mr. "Grith addressed the crowd witheat interruption.

Sligo was previously isolated and mutinous Irish Republican irmy soldiers seized the Post Office preventing telegraphing. Fire w exchanged between the appasing forces during the morning, which resulted in one republican being killed and cre wounded. A re- publican civilian was slightly injured.

A communique states that an L. R. A. group of men with some armed rides ushed Mr. Collins' party's motorcar on the latter's arrival in Dublin and fired on Mr. Collins. The fre was returned by a man with a revolver and a bomb was captured. The assailants disabled and captured another headquarters ear but attacks on the Beggars Bush Barracks army transport and the civic guard at Balls Bridge were fruitless and without casualties.

BRITAIN AND THE BOXER INDEMNITY.

London, April 17.

Mr. Chus Sin-kah in a letter to the Times, from Christ's College, Cambridge, suggests that the Boser indemnits could be utilized for the mutual benefit of Great Britain and Chica by Great Britain remitting it, if applied towards encouraging and aiding Chinese students to come to Great Britain, thus following the example. set by the United States. He dwells" on the commercial and other advantages which would be derived therefrom and points out that while over 2,000 Chinese are at present studying in America, there are only 200 students in Great Britain. In support of his argument Mr. Chus submits that the United States in a few years will seriously challenge Great Britain's present premier position in the economic field and China will be a heavy buyer in the world's market once, she is past the present transition stage.
