In the House of Commons, in reply to questions, Lord Winter- ton gave figures showing that there was an estimated production of 1,645,000 lbs. opium from 143 acres in British India in 1920-1. The groes revenue to the Central Government from this was 2,415,000. The corresponding figures for 1918-9 were 2.247,000 lbs. from 17 acres THE PRINCE IN JAPAN. Lord Winterton had no information in regard to the total pro- duction of the Indian States, where it was estimated that there were 56 acres in 1919-20 compared with 24 acres in 1918-9. Ten chests of opium were exported from British India in 1919-20 compared with fourteen in 1918-9.
