THE FEBRUARY WAGE OF THE SOUTH WALES MINERS. The following statement on the South Wales coal trade andit for December, which regulates wages for February, has been issued yesterday by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners" Association After allowing for the cost of standard wages, other easts, and the owners' standard profit of 17 per cent, the certia- cate shows that the percentage on the 1915 standard base rate which tas industry can afford to pay for February is 6.99 per cent. After meeting the cost of the standard wages, other costs, and providing for the owners' standard only £6,538, and under the terms profit, the surplus available is of the national agreement this is divisible in the proportion of 83 per cent to the workmen and 17 per cent. to the owners. The first charge on the industry, how- ever, is the minimum of 28 per cent. on the 1915 standard base

It is to be point- ed out further, that in that month the workmen benefited by more regular work than any other coalfield in the country, and in December, prior to the Christmas holidays, the average number of days worked was 5.55 per week. Mr. Gibson adds it must be borne in mind that De- cember loses two days in respect of Christmas holidays. This re- solted in a decrease in output of between 350,000 and 400,000 tons in the week ending December 31 compared with the average week. ly output in the three preceding weeks. Moreover, there was con- siderable voluntary absenteeism. The number of shifts lost which. recently bad avarazed 47,000 per week increased in the week end- ing December 24 to 62,000, and in the week ending December 31 to not less than 83,000, excluding the twodays' holiday.
