COMMERCIAL NEWS:
BRITISH COAL OUSTS AMERI CAN America, says Lloyd's List has every reason to be concerned Jover her inability to compete with
British coal at present prices, It: is class enough that she is losing : her hold on the export business which she secured during our coal control and mining stoppage Itroubles. Chartering for Europa can hardly be said to exist and certainly makes no such figure in freight market transactions as it did in the summer and autumn. A little business continues to be dogo with Argentina and Brazil, but even there British coal is com peting with every appearance of [success. What is still more re- markable is that, according to the latest advice from New York, British coal is offering' in the West Indies at prices which threaten to destroy the monopoly which American exporters have for some time enjo.ed in that market, and the plaint is even raised that our coal is now being sold for general consumption in New York and Boston. It also appears that owing to the re- latively high price of American coal, bunkering business at the Atlantic ports is falling off, staamers preferring to bunker. abroad at lower prices. All this, of course, is produced as evidence in favour of forcing a reduction in the Americanrailway rates. These Įrates are pressing just as heavily on United coat owners and es- porters as they are on our coal trade here, and a reduction of 5s. a ton in the transport charges to the seaboard is now demanded through the Secretary of Cóm- merch. Such a reduction would undoubtedly make a lot of differ- ence in American Lo.b. prices, and the very fact that it is now bing debated by the railroad companies makes the decision of the British companies to afford some reliet to our own industry all the more welcome.
A MOUNTAIN OF IRON. Prof. Sir Edgeworth David, of Sydney University, on his return from a geological visit to South ́· Australia, made enthusiastic re- ferences to the wealth of iron ore. deposits at Iron Knot, near Port Augusta. "At the south end of the Iron Monarch, a buze round- ed bil rising 600-ft. above the saltbush plaio, is a wonderful quarry" said Prof. David. "This quarry with its face of 900-ft. in length and a height of 200-ft. is z grand sight. probably the fines: of its kind to be seen anywhere in the world. Not even the great iron ore deposits of the States can present anything on so grand a scale."
IRON ORE DEVELOPMENT. It is anticipated that the instal-. lation of a new plant on the west Edward coast of Tasmanis will result in a monthly yield of 20,000 tons of iron ore. The development of the field is going forward rapidly. further sections being pegged os behalf of Hoskins, Ltd, the well. known Australian iroomasters. Consequent apon the increased duty of 59-per ton on sulphur imports it is expected that Tasmanian pyrites mine will be re-opened and be able success- fully to compete against sulphur from South America ard Japan.
