COMMERCIAL NEWS,

CHINESE NATIONAL FLAG AS TRADE MARE.

The Ministry of Agriculture, and Commerce has before it the question of whether or not the of the Chinese national flag should be permitted in trade marks.

KIANGSU CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE.

ME. C.C. Nieh, chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, has bean alacted Shanghai representative of the Kiangsu Chambers of Commerce. SINO-MEXICAN NEGOTIATIONS.

Mr. Wang Chi-tseng, Minister to Mexico reports that his negotiations with the Mexican Government for a revision of the Sino-Mexican Commercial Treaty have been carried through with marked success, except as regards the question of the withdrawal of extraterritorial rights to Mexicans in China. He says that Mexico appears to have no objection to this withdrawal beyond the fact that she desires to have the same rights as other Powers. Mr. Wank is doubtfel whather Maxico will give in, ia the present circumstancES.

SCRAP DEAL GOING THROUGH. Respecting the big scrap denis previously referred to, it may now be stated that Herr Stinnes when here sécured 1,000,000 tons of sheet scrap. The first price offer- ed was absurdly low, 15s to 20s per ton being mentioned, but as buyers would not entertain such business the bids had to be raised. The German iron and steel works are very short of raw material, and shipments are to begin almost at once. If a fairly cheap freight can be booked the steel scrap could be landed in Germany at round about 75s per ton; thus the German steelmakers have done a VÚTY good stroke of business. The American purchase of 1,000,000 tons of beavy steel scrap is DON going through, and the deal will ba completed within a few days. The supplies will be taken chiefly" from the South Wales districts and also the Midlands, - with sbipments starting early in 1922. There is a lot of rubbishing iron and steel scrap about all over the country, and the difficulty is to get it sorted properly. This makes for very low prices, but it 19 generally considered that bottom has been touched. Not ooly Americs and Germany, but France may be in the market for scrap material shortly. There is a lot of miscellane- scrap coming over here from France and Belgium, but in France deliveries of raw material are being delayed, and inquiries for iron and steel scrap from that quarterare already being received on this side. The pression seems to be gaining ground that the

OU

pesce at home will be filowed by a firm understand- ing af Washington, in which case the demand for steel for industrial purposes during the next year or two would be anormous. British steel interesta are not st present showing much interest in scrap supplies, but presumably if the price jumps up shortly they will wake up to the poesibilities of the situation.
