TEXTILE TRADE IN INDIA.

A representative of the Calico Printers' Association, one of the mast important organisations in Britain, is proceeding to India to investigate the desirability of establimbing factories for printing and finishing cloth, and probably for manufacturing it also, thus avoiding the tariff and a possible extension of the boycott The printing and finishing industry in Lancashire is suffering a severe depression, and it is authoritatively stated that it will soon be impossible to carry On. partly owing to French competi- tion, which is very keen owing to low wages and low exchange, and partly because Germany is selling her dyestuffs to France at half cost, owing to the restrictive effects of the British tariff log- islation. The factory owners of Lancashire declare that they will be compelled to establish factories abroad or abandon business,

The best known cloth manufacturing companies in Chinkiang are Tse Yu. Hua Chang and the Provincial No. 3 Factory, respectively passessing 150, 150 and 100 looms. total output yearly is more than 20,000 pieces. The manufacture is mostly consumed locally.~ Soap Manufacturing Companies. There are five companies manu- facturing soap in Chinking, but rope of them has made any riking_progress-Satin Piece Goods Company. Messrs Tien Fu Chen and Kin Chien Sha have jointly raised capital of $100,- 000. for the establishruant, of a Satin Piece Goods Company on the old premises of the MuTM Sun Watch Mfg. Company. It in 100 now equipped with over looms and employs about 200 workers.
