COMMERCIAL NEWS,

COTTON SPINNINO. Opinion is divided upon sha [prospect of the Japanese cotton: Trade after the entire withdrawal' of the present restriction. In the {viaw of the pessimists, the mills will increase their output upon the restrictions being removed, while the workers, if given better pay. will no doubt welcome longer hours

OSAKA'S CHINA TRADE. Osaka's trade with China, which comprises 75 per cent. of tha.whoiə ovarsens trade in that: port, reachad Y157,798,761 in exports and Y36,548749 in im- ports during the first nine months of this year showing a decrease - of Y66,564,413 in exports and and V12,046,028 as compared with. the corresponding period of last Tear. The Jiji says that such depression in this year's trade. (though attributed largely to the decline in the price of articles of trade, is also accounted for by the appearance on the Chinese market of British, American, Gar- man, and other goods, which has. entailed frequent inconveniences upon the export of Japanese goods, in addition to the general purchasing power having declined with the national" financial embarrassments. Classifying tha commodities exported, cotton yarn beaded the list with 294,154 bales, valued at 27,869,000, followed by cotton thread, white cotton cloth, figured cotton cloth. Manualette, news print, copper, iron-ware, spindles, etc, which all totalled over Yen 1,000,000. Cotton yara, as compared with last year, shows the considerable, decrease of Y19,770,000, while all other exports similarly declined. COTTON SHIPMENTS FROM QUEENSLAND.

The arrival at Liverpool of the steamer Westmoreland is notable landmark in the Queens. and cotton industry, for the vessel carried the first instalment of cotton sald by Queensland producers under the DOW arrangement with the British Colton Growers' Association. The cotton, which was taken on board at Brisbane, consisted of 654 bales, representing 169,678 tbe. This was- quickly followed by the second ostalment, 94,7071bs, made" up in 381 bales, and carried by the steamer Harorata, also from Bris bans. The third instalment is afloat, having been put on, board the steamer Middlesex. It will be remembered that the agent- General for Queensland, the Hon. J. M'Ewan Hunter, attended last June the World Cotton Conference in Liverpool and Manchester, in order to bring the cotton of his State to public notice. He pro- duced samples which had been tested by the Manchester Cham ber of Commerce, and it is said the report opon them was very encouraging. He was convinced that Queensland had at least £0,000,000 acres of land capable of producing coston of the quality required by Lancashire, and he looked forward to the day when Australia would sand to the World Cotton Conference 14 ADY representatives as came from the Uarted States of America.
