A Judicial Inquiry.
Prurionaly M. Brised, commenting upon M. Berthelot's resignations, stated that M. Barthelot's telegram to New York on the whole happy move, although M. Briand, if consulted, might Save suggested different wording. M. Briand added that, the financial Consortium having been dissolved, it was necessary to find other means to refloat the Banque Industrielle de Chine by using the Boxer indemnity.
M. Briand wound up by stating that an enquiry had been started and that all responsibilities will be brought to light. M. Briand warmly eulogized M. Berthelot, stating that France was thus losing
a faithful servant.

M. Painleve spoke in M. Briand's support in favour of the Loxer indemnity being devoted to France's good work in the Far Senator Henriot stated that 30,000 Chinese students have the same wish. M. Briand replied that this would be done and that no private interest will be allowed to stand in the way.
M. Briand a motion for a Parliamentary inquiry. A judicial enquiry he already instituted, to which the Chamber agreed by 390 vote to 213. The order of the Day submitted by the Government's adversaries was rejected by 373 votes to 151. Ultimate ly the Chamber pessed by 506 votes to a motion accepted by the Liovernmen: asserting the necessity of maintaining French prestige in Eastern countries.

Speaking at a luncheon at the Mansion House in honour of the Japanese commercial mission, the Japanese Ambassador Barón Hayashi regretted that the Anglo-Japanese alliance bad been ter minated, but said that the Japanese were most thankfal to Mr Balfour for giving them a great four-power treaty.
