BRITISH LEGION

RALLY

Ear! Haig's Call for Unity.

A Grand Bally of the Edinburgh Branches of the British Legion was held in the Synod Hall recently, when the chair was co- cupied by the President, Field- Marabal Earl Haig.

In introducing Lord Haig. Col. Sir, William Stewart Dick Cunyngham, Bart., President of the British Legion in Scotland, said that they welcomed him as the foremost Scotsman of the day. His lordship would shortly be re- siding at the ancient home of the Haigs, presented to bim his grateful fellow-countrymen. (Applause.)

by

Earl Hag. who was received with much cheering, said that when he returned from France in the spring of 1919, he found several admirable ex-Service men's societies in existence, but all were squabbling with one an other, and the politicians were able to play off the opinions of one acainst the opinions of another Consequently the cause of their

d comrades suffered. It seemed to him that the only solutiau was o unite and form ona large rganisation to include all ex- Service men. So he preached" arity, and for nearly three years, he had been preaching unity, he was lad to say with somesUCC:39. (Chrer) Four of the largest organisations decided to come to ze her, and that was the origin uf the British Legion. They wanted all ex-Service men to unite and ull on the same end of the rope for the bene St of those of theirbd comrades who were in distress and diary, They could then p forward their claims.in such a nanner that no Government could refuse them. They most Des this china on the nation. Toey merely ask d for jus ice to those who had given their all. (Cheers.)

There were 550,000 ex-Service men out of work and 1,200,000 dissbled men to be cared for. There were 170,000 widows and 18,000 motherless children. There were also 400,000 other de- pendents to be looked after. In support of his contention that heir claims were reasonable his tordship examined the construc- tive programme" of the British Legion. In order to attain the objects therein set forth hey must gain the confidence of the community as a whole ard show their fellow-citizens that they wanted only what was just and reasonable, and were a body of men to be trusted. To forget was a common failing. (Chem.) When the war ended £20,500,000 were promised for industrial training for disabled men. Only £3,000,000 had been spent. Five and a half millions were promised for broken apprenticeships; only £1,000,000 had been spent. Twenty-three millions promised for the settlement of ex-Service men сп the land; to-day
