Kiangkwan, the China Coast Officers' Guild has been handed a cheque for Mex. $11,- 109,32 for transmission to the widow of Captain Conley, and it s understood that a cheque for Mex. $4,024.68 has also been handed to those acting on behalf of the sister of Mt. CALCUTTA CONFERENCE. The delegates of the shipping companies affiliating with the Calcutta Conference met at the Kobe Branch of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha last month and decided to decrease freight rates by 15 per cent. Dryzoods were lowered from Y30 to Y25 and matches from Y2 to Y19 with a 10 per cent. rebate. The Osaka Shosen Kaisha, which is prepared for war on the Calcutta line, un-

to

less it is admitted to the Confer- ence, is ready to accept ship- ments at 30 per cent. less than these reduced rates, and is now busily canvassing for freight In the case of matches it is I said have offered $ cer- tain consignor freight space at 10. It is stated, however, that in view of the relations existing between shippers and the allied companies in respect of deferred rebates, none of the consignors dare to accept the O.S.K. rates. The Attractive as they are. lowering of the Conference rates certain amount of indicates a nervousness, however..

SHIPBUILDING IN JAPAN. Japan's, shipbuilding trade to day is but the shadow of its tormer self, says the Jupan Chronicle. Especially since the current year have now orders diminished while even previous agreements have been cancelled. The dockyards, which totalled six in 1913, increased to fifty- seven during the war, but have now decreased to twenty-six. There were a bundred and fifty- seven ships building daring the war, but the total now comes to A similar only eighty-seven. tendency is visible in the number of workers. At one time there were as many as a hundred thousand workers, while at pre- sent forty-two thousand are still surviving. With the future re- trenchment of yards, further dis- missals of employees will be inevitable. Since this year, the Uchids and Toba Shipbuilding Yards have closed their doors. Even well-established yards for want of shipbuilding orders have been constracting bridges, and shipbuilding would be at a dis count altogether but for Japan's naval expansion. It is remark- able, however, that new tonnage keeps up pretty well, owing to the few ships built being of large size. During the days of the economic boom, the majority of the ships under construction were freighters, because shipowners were very solicitons of obtaining boltoms to carry cargoes. Over ten of the ships now under con. struction, however, are either genuine passenger ships or pas- senger and cargo ships. Launch- fogs of over 100 tons during the first half of this year stood at 20 vessels aggregating 144,200 tons. of compared with 60 vessels 183,755 tons in the corresponding" period of last year.
