The demand for mineral oil has .. teen increasing in many direc tions of late. The Nippon and Hoden Petroleum companies supply the whole of their outpu. of petrol to the Nary and War Departments. The market re- ceives but small supplies of light oil, now feeling a deficit. The recent endeavours of the Texas Oil Company to export to Japan notable. This American company has already placed stocks in the bands of a certain warehousing company, Kidzuge- wa, Osaka, and is selling sixty- five degree oil at Y14 to Y14,50.

The match trade in Japan, which had continued in a state of depression for a lengthy period has, the Mainichi reports, sudden- ly become active with a crop of jorders received from India, Sing- apore and Jave since the end of last mouth. During July, over 35,700 cases were exported to foreign countries—an increase of over 1,300 cases as compared with the previous month sad of about 18.000 cases with the correspond- ing month of last year. This the Osaka paper attributes to the extreme scarcity of stocks in the consuming countries and to exchange quotations having ooly now become favourable for exports from Japan. Manu- facturers are working to their fallest capacity, expecting from the present state of affairs that anything up to 40.000 cases can. be exported a month against an average of 24,000 boxes to 25,000 cases in the first six months of this year.
