US. SHIPPING MAINTENANCE
COSTS.
The United States press has shown signs of jubilation over the reported low costs of keeping the 663 steel ships which the Ship- ping. Board has in activa com- mercial operation fit for service. This, it is stated:has been brought down to 059 cents per deadweight ton per week. At this rate the Bum of 3.068 dols. per deadweight ton annually would be spent on. repairs and maintenance of the 4,964,883 tons of merchant vessels, This figure includes all damages suffered, drydocking charges, re- pairs to both deck and engine rooms, and betterments ordered make the Shipping Board vessels more efficient. There ha been a steady reduction made in the maintenance costs. When Commander R. D. Gatewood was samed director of the division of construction and repair by Ad- miral WJ. Benson, then chair- man of the Shipping Board, the records of the division showed that it was casting the Govern- ment 182c per week, or 9,50 dole,, per year, per deadweight ton. Since that time the cost of repairs has, come down" a considerable extent, but it is said the effcienoy. of the division has been inerẞád- ed also.
