AMERICAN TRADE WITH FORTH
CHINA. The Foreign Trade Bulletin for July-August of the American Express
Co says~Despite famine and general unrest in inland centres, the general tone of the North China market is fairly well maintained. In cer taiq_lines throughout the first three months of 1921, continued activity is reported. Imparts isto Tientsin from foreign coun- tries (as distinct from native imports reached a record in 1920, which. considering the
depression all over Far Eastern Asia can only be regarded as mos:
satisfactory. The 1919 figures-Haikwan taels 85,348,-
80-were eclipsed by about saels 350,000. Exports, however, fell. from the 1919 record af Taels 71,550,033 by about the same amount as the imparts rose. The latest available figures show that exports of carpets, eggs, sheep's" wool and rape-seed during the first quarter of 1921, have exceeded the figures for the same period of the previous year. The latest Customs report shows that,

in most of the principal import lines coming into the Tienkin · market, increases are recorded, This applies to metals, dyes, railway" material, timber, etc., but the market cannot be can- sidered as normal. Tientsio is the most important port of North Obion with a half dozen lines of steamships running into the port. In addition to these lines, there are some six thousand junks trading into and out of the river. An important land traffic also centres at Tientsin-nine rail- ways radiating from the city. The city itself covers about 4,000 acres, and is the port of entry for Peking and extensive inland tomitory, being the point of convergence of many ces of communication.
WIRELESS POG SIGNALS. Three "wireless fog signals are to be installed at the entrance to New York Harbour. Each sta- tion will be equipped with an automatic set which will send oat signals continuously during fog or thick weather. Three signals may be picked up by, vessels by means of a wireless compass, so that by taking ob- servations on the different stations, the exact position may be determined. The method has been developed by joint experi- ments conducted by the Bureau | of Standards and the Lighthouse
Service.
ASSOCIATION OF CHINESE STOCK EXCHANGES.
Representatives of 17 Shang- hai "exchanges" met at the Oriental Restaurant recently and decided to form an Association of Stock Exchanges. It is said that membership will be confined to thase exchanges whose establishment has been registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce.
