NAKKINOYCOTTON,
The provincial government |(Kwangsi) is : committed to a
policy of encouragement of cotton.” cultivation, and su exhibit held during December at the provin- cial assembly hall admirably re flected the new activities in this connexion. The object of the experimental work conducted by [the authorities is to discover (which districts offer the best prospects for the moressful grow's ling of raw cotton; and the com- mittee appointed to investigate this question have reported that the finest yield has been met with at Posob, where American seed was used. Soed obtained from | Kiangsu also gave vary. fair re sults. Much time may elapse before any substantial measure of success is met with; but there seems ground for encouragement, and it is pleasant to be able to record A forward movement. There has been a marked in- crease in the demand for locally manufactured cotton cloth, and the factories have been excep tionally busy all through the year. The influence of the factors ruling during the past few years, mischievous and rapressive though it has been in mspr directions, has probably 'tended to advance the efficiency of this local industry to a greater degras than would otherwise have been I possible by compelling its devel- opment tu meet pressing local requirements. A coarse cotton cloth, made from low counts of yarn under most primitive con- ditions in houses in this district, is freely bought by the poorer classes. Nanning Trade Report,
KAISHA.
