FRENCH STATE SHIPPING. The Chamber of Deputies last manth discussed the scheme of the liquidation of State vessels created during the war. They number 300 ships of an aggregate tonnage of 1,000,000 tons, and are valued at 1,500 million francs. The reporter of the Merchant Navy Committee said during the War the Food Supply Department had 500 ships at its disposal, and, thanks to a contrast with the Hadson Bay Company. was able to realise an economy of 114 million francs. Several vessels were bought through an intermediary of the Hudson Bay Company, but the French Govern- ment would only become owners SHANGHAI,

"A agreement bas now been come to on panels of the National Maritime Board as to seamen's
and firemen's overtime. The clause which is being submitted to the ports lays down the conditions under which overtime is to be payable. It fixes the rate par hour for overtime on a somewhat modified scale as compared with the last agree- maent and it makės provision that instead of overtime the aer may get equivalent time off. Local customs, which bave hitherto worked well and been entirely satisfactory both to em- ployers and men, can, under the elause and at the option of em- plorers and employed, be 'per- petusted. HUSSING COST OF GERMAN SHIPPING.
In the House of Commons, Mr. J. D. Mr. Stanley Bald- win replied:-Such information As we have goes to show that the Dost of coal and of wazes on German ship is much lower than on a British ship, but I am not in a position to give exact figures.
