THE KIUKIANG-NANORANG RAILWAY.
A Peking message says ——The Japanese Legation bas of late given a warning to the Walchino- po, requesting it to immediately reform the management of the Kiukiang-Nanchang Railway in view of the fact that the working of the railway is in aneb a wretched condition that it is "in- capable of paying off even inter- ast on the loan.
FOREION DEMAND FOR BRITISH COAL. The belief expressed by Lord Gainford that, given the whole- hearted co-operation of the win- ers, our lost coal market abroad can be recovared, finds confirm. ation in many directions. *Our old customers are anxious to re- turn to us just as soon as prices permit,” was how a leading ship- owner summarised the situation in sa interview with a Press re- presentative.
"We know from
experience that many of the coal importing countries prafer to draw thair supply from us so long as our prices do not compare too un- favourably with those of compet- ing exporters. Now this latent demand is taking a practical turn. Already a number of vessels have been chartered to carry coal from this country-pa-ticularly from South Wales-to the River Plate, That is one of our most important markets, since so much of our food supplies are drawn from the Argentine. And it is here that the competition of American cost has been very severely felt in recent years-indeed British coll has almost been ousted, on af. count of the high price and scar- city. America, too, has of late been supplying the general coaling sta tions in the Ailaotic-the Azores, Las Palmas, and soon. Now these islands are returning to us for their supply. For ship's backers our coal is unrivalled in quality. This is strikingly shown by the experience of ships which during the recent stoppage of the pits were forced to burn Durch coal. It was found that the Trans- atlantic voyage was lengthened by two or three days, and the royage to the Plate by five to seven days, in comparison with the time taken when burning Welsh coal. Italy ja an example of a country which has been forced to rely largely on America for its coal in the past few years. They are now also taking German coal. Abeceria, from `Kristiania.
But the representative in South Wales of the Italian railways is Davies 4 Peak, from Singapore.now saying that we can regain
