COAL AT 15/- A TON, "People have got in the way of talking as if a coal settlement would be a sort of patiacea for ali our industrial ilis. Unfortunately that is far from the truth. It would not be of much usa telling a sick beggar that a cure for bis disease was now being produced, but that the cost was £1,000 a drop. The same thing applies to trade troubles; industry cannot carry on without fuel, but it is no good extracting that fuel from the bowels of the earth if it is too

emphasising this paint Mr. A. Peech, chairman of the United Steel Companies, Ltd. of Shef- field, said in an interview. My view is that the future of the British steel industry is entirely dependent on the price which that industry has to pay for its coal, and therefore its coke. It is known that approximately four tons of coal are required for the various stages in the production of one ton of steel. From this it is self-evident bow all-important the price of coal is in the cost of production of steel. In order to manufacture pig iron at £6 per ton coke must be delivered to the blast furnace at about 303 per ton, and in order to make coke at this price the industry cannot aford to pay more than about15s per ton for its coal Unless cos! and cake are available to steel works at relative prices to the selling price of steel I fail to see how out blast furnaces can be restarted and our steel works put into operation. All other mate rials used in the manufacture of iron and steel are falling, and have fallen considerably. Most of the men in steelworks have their wages regulated on a slid- ing scale this sliding scale will commence to operate very short- ly, and will lead to substantial reductions in wages costs. In discussing the question of the difficulties of the steel trade, it is impossible to leave au: of con- sideration the handicap under which it is suffering to-day owing. to the extraordinary condition of exchange of our main European competitors. It is obvious from anxious inquiries We have received as of the duration of the coal crisis that railways abroad are seriously consutering the ques- tion of going to our foreign com- petitors with a view to getting prompt deliveries. It is feared that orders for steel from the Do- minions and Indis may shortly be placed with our foreign com- petitors, and if they should be placed abroad, the result will be to make the restarting e" our in- dustry still more difficult."
