THE STORY-IN PICTURES-OF CARPENTIER'S DOWNFALL

Here is the beginning of the end-Georges Carpentier It was the knocked into the ropes, hanging there halfway 002. first sign of Jack Dempsey's victory, coming quickly upon the heels of the Frenchman's surprisingly good showing in the second round and the many good punches he put over. in spite of Dempsey's overwhelming rushes, in the third round. Georges was up quickly--but soon, weakened by body pummeling in the

clinches, bo suffered his first real koockdown at Dempsey's hands (shown in the center picture.) Quick as a Bash Dempsey booked a left to Georges head and crashed over a right to the heart, the Frenchman falling face downward near the ropes; for a moment be rested on bis knees and elbows, rolled over and came up under a count of nine. A moment later it was all over and Carpentier was knocked out. The third picture shows

Referce Harry Ertle and Dempsey himself reaching down to lift up the beaten challenger. Dempsey bad put over a right- band blow to the heart and a left hook to the jaw, and followed with a lightning shift-a left to the body and a right to the jaw. Georges tried vainly to rise, but he had to be helped to his feet after Referee Ertle had counted the fatal ten over him,

This time Georges Carpentier was down-and out. Once before he had statggered to his feet after a count of nine. Here is abown the second-and final-knockdown. As Referee Harry Ertle tolled off the count, Carpentier made a jerky, convulsive movement as if to arisa: but his weakened frame was unequal to the effort; he sank back and rolled over on his side-Enished. Dempsey is shown at the other side of the ring watching the referee's arm come down with the count of ten.

A wide, confident smile spread over Carpentier's face as be sat, wrapped in his gray bathrobe, in his corner before the beginning of the fight Here (at the left) is the smile that quickly came off! After the battle he wasn't smiling. He sat slumped in his corner (as shown at the right) surrounded by his seconds, ministering to him.
