PILFERAGE REMEDIES.
The second interim report of the Pilferage Committee of the London Chamber of Shipping con- demns the custom of issuing bills of lading with goods received for shipment, as it facilitates pilfer- age. The raport urses ship owners not to issue a "shipped" hill of lading pull the goods are on board the steamer. It says Inas owing to the lack of support, the London police scheme of aupervision of cargoes. is about. to be withdrawn from certain locks chiefly used by lines not controlled in London, but it is understood thas the police au- thorities 273 considering the extension of the London special lock police scheme for the whole river at a cost of £500,000 per andom. The report further re- i commands abiponwers to keep in
touch with the Department of Overseas Trade, and its commer- cial secretaries abroad, who bave already readored vainable assistance in connection with pilterage.

This new vesael, which will be built by the Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company at Duo- dee, will have a displacement of 15,000 tons and a speed of approx- imately 13 knots. The machinery will be supplied by Burmeister & Wain and will comprise
two engines of the same size and type as those fitted in the four 14,000-ton Glen Liners built by Harland & Wold. Each engine develops 3,200 i.h.p. in sight eylio. ders, and the total daily fuel consumption of the vessel when fully laden. including the oil necessary. for all the.auxiliaries, will be under 20 tons. In accord- ance with the policy followed by the majority of owners of motor ships, practically all the auxillary plant will be driven by means of electric motors, and for the provi- sion of the current three 150 kw, Diesel-driven generators are to be icstalled in the engine-room. Among other recent orders for large motor ships are two 14,000- ton vessels for the Holland- America Line, and a vessel of similar dimensions but designed mainly for passenger carrying is being built to the order of another line. All these vessels are now on the stocks at Harland & Wolf's yards, and in each case twin- sorew machinery of 6,400 L.h.p. will be installed, built to the same design as the engines in the mator" ship for toe Ocean Steamship Company.
