AMERICAS SILK DUTIES. The New York Branch of the Mitsui Bussan Kaisha bas recant-- ly approached the Federation of the Nippon Export Silk Guilds with a request that they give all possible support to the Chairman of the American Silk Association who is now using every effort against sht increase of the Customs

duty nader the new Frecch silk has already decided to contribute 85,000. The Japanese instirate, in view of this, bas applied to the New York Silk Weavers'Associa tion for a contribution of Y5,000 as a first step. It is reported that the members of the institute will go about asking the silk interests throughout the country for sub- scriptions to combat the increase of duty."

JAPANESE COAL FOR INDIA.

The export of Japanese coal to India is now often reported in Japanese papers. The Yamashita Mining Company is said to have obtained an order for 30,000 tons from Bombay, and already char- tered the T. K. E. Bayo-maru (8,796 tons) at 250 on immediate delivery for a period of two and a half months. The Mitsof, Suzuki, Asano, and some business concerns seem also to have been favcured with substantial orders. Both Japanese and foreign ship- owners are offerit, ships to carry the goods. The consignors bold out for Y11 between Kyusho and Bombay and Y12 between Dairen and Bombay, while the ship- owners ask for Y13 to Y12.50 between Kyushu and Bombay and Y13 to Y13.50 between Dairen and Bombay.
