THE PAPER MARKET,

The long-impoverished Garman paper Industry, it is reported, has now recovered and is dispatching inquiries to Canada and China, [which it supplied goods before the war... Quantities”, have already been exported to America, while the Japanese market is also receiving inquiries. Japanese merchants, it is recorded.-are devising measures to prevent the the import of German paper. The Mainichi holds the opinion that it is unlikely that Imports will come in soon. On the other band, inquiries for export at lów figures are flowing into Japan from Scandinavia, where anor mous stocks of paper for Japanese asa are lying idle, and this, is considered a threat to the Japan- ese market.

THE OUTPUT OF JAPANESE TEXTILES.

The output of Japanese textiles has been restond to a great extent. Since April, great ship- ments of cotton textiles have been effected to India, Colna, North Manchuria, Egypt, and the Balkans, while the occurrence of some demand in Japan has de- creased stocks considerably. The Hattori and Toyoda Weaving Companies have begun making contracts for July delivery, Aichi ken and Osaka-fu hate now almost as large an outpot as in the days of the boom. In silk centres, weavers, in view of the severe blow which was dealt them at the time of last year's

tained their caution and have not gone any further than to weate in accordance with the orders received. Bat provincial whole- sale merchants have rushed for purchases since April, whils weaving has become very re- pionerative in consideration of the low price of silk yarn. These circumstances have led weavers in Is-zaki (Gumms-ken) and Yozenawa (Yafagata-ken) to show their fullest possible producing capacity. Hachioji (Tokyo-tu) is curtailing output by 32 per rent, however, owing to the provision for the manufactore of winter cloth.
