"THE WIRE-ROPE INDUSTRY.
Sheffield maken 646r 6,206 tons. of wire rapor a year, angh, the Industry, is growing, thanks to the enterprise of three local firinstə The industry was started in 1860. The second firm began operations- in 1897, and the thiri in 3910.“ There is a considerable local de- mand from the collieries · for baulage ropes, but moár of Sheffold's wire ropes - are sont further afield, or aflost. Thou- sands of ships are rigged with Shafield ropes, and this marine Hine is a thriving one. Foreige and Colonial gold mines and other concerns are also important customers. Sheffield wire ropes : have inberens virtuos, by reason of the superiority of the local steel of which they are made...... Thirty-five elaborate machines
are used in the madufsoture of these wire ropes.
• ECONOMIC FURNACE. • At the locomotive works of Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd., a new type of oil burner, invented by a local epi pert, has been tried in a steel“ furnace with good results. The burner is fed by gravity fuel feed supply, and renders unnecessary all pumps, pressure fael supply. oil heaters and filters. The fur- Inace is claimed to be of high economical value. On a loco- motive now being erected a new type of condenser is to be install- ed, and it is asserted that it will re- volutionize the locomotive as it is raning to-day. With it the coal saving alone is estimated at 33le per cent. Another interesnng development at Scotswood is the manufacture of small paraffin, perrol and gas engines in sizes ranging from 3 h.p. to 13 b.p.. which are suitable for small work- shops and for farm work.
