Stamp Bill, cannot logically refuse. to listen and give due weight to these arguments. which have been brought forward here this after- noon at this meeting. With regard to the question of how the Government is to make the revenue and expenditure meet, should like to say a few worde to you, because it seems to me that so far as this Colony is con- cerned we are not by any means in such a low financial position as to tender it necessary to impose this 7 per cent, increase on rates at all. (Applause). As you. sre aware, the Government will shortly be realising from the sale of the Old Post Office site a large sum of money, probably amounting to something exceeding $1,500,000- an amount between one-and-a-half nod two millions of dollars. Fur- thermore, as we recently saw from the Government Gazette of Mod April of this year, the Government his actually invested in Govero. ment stocks a reserve of very near- ly four and a half million dollars,
and therefore it ferme to me that it cannot be said that this Colony is financially on it beam ends in the true sense of the word. And again there is another point referred to by my

this afternoon, but as it has been raised perhaps I may meation one tox which seems to me ALL eminently fair one for the Govern- meat to irapose, and that is a tax on passengers coming into this Cclony by ocean going steamers. A we are all aware, such a tax exists in the Philippine Islande, and it is easy of collection. It is only a question of making the passenger pay a small sum more when he takes his passage for Hongkong, and it is surely fair that tourists who come amongst us and who have the pleasure of going round the Island or going round the New Territories on our motor roads, should pay something for the enjoyment of the view. (Applause), I think the other points have been so fully dealt with by other speakers that I need not enlarge on them, and therefore 1 will now put to this meeting the resolution moved by Captain Wheeler and seconded by Hon. Mr Lau Chu Pak.
The resolution Was carried. unanimously, which concluded the meeting.
"EXOTIC' DANCES CONDEMNED. The movement in favour of te revival of the valss initiated at iho Dancing. Masters' Congress, which has just closed at Paris, is greeted by the French Press with great satisfaction. For some time past there has been a determined campaign in the best society oir cles against extravagant exot.c dances, many of which, it is de- clared, are totally unsitable for European ballrooms, Bud this agitation has received, consider- able support in the French Press.
