THE CANTON HOSPITAL.

A Year's Benificent Work

One cannot rend through the report of the Canton Hospital for the year 1920 without being: further impressed by the really valuable work this institutionTM| the oldest hospital in the Orient

is doing to alleviate the phys- ical sufferings of the people of Canton. Established as far back as 1835 by Dr. Parker, the history of the Canton Hospital is a re- cord of unselfish endeavour on the part of missionary intereste: to apply in practical form tho Christian teachings they are seeking to propagate, and the report for 1920 makes encourag- [ing reading. For the past four

years the hospital had been under. the care of the Canton Medical Missionary Union and its position has been lifted up from that of indebtedness to one of carefully managed finances and expert | supervision.

The Report of the Board of Directors states that the 85th: year of the Canton Hospital has been one of the best in its history. The number of in-patients, 2,339, is exceeded only by the number of the provious year. They came from 15 of the 18 provinces, from Manchuria, Hongkong and Macao. Gonorous subscriptions have been received, as in former: years, from foreign residents and business firms. There is an in-

The details of the work of the year) may be learned from the reports) of the various departments. The most marked advance is in the department of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat under Drs. Hayes and Boyd. The new readiness on the part of the Chinese to take pre- ventative treatment is in marked contrast to earlier days, when patients only came in the last stages of a disease. It would he hard to over-estimate the far- reaching results of that work developing among students of both Government and Mission Schools. Of special interest is the weekly clinic for lopers con. ducted by Dr. Cadbury in which 100 of these unfortunates have received treatment during the year.

The raport, having stated that moet this demand. You have to the income for the year was $83,- pay more for the land that you 488 (a record) and having paid a purchase from the Government well-deserved compliment to the and you have to spend much more hard-working business manager, in building."
