POLL TAX IN N. MANCHURIA. According to reports received from North Manchuria, the Russian authorities in the Amur Region have recently established poll tax stations along the Russian banks of the river. For every person coming from the Chinese territory a tax of 20 cts. is levied. and for every carriage 30 cts. The merchants, both Russian and Chinese, are quite indignant over this high-handed measure.

ELECTRIC STEEL LASTINGS. Whilst the disinclination of
made by the electris melting process has resulted in a pro- nounced slump in electric steel since the munitions pressure was relaxet probably nearly two- third of our electric furnance capacity now being idle-it is not uninteresting to learn from the Iron Age the state of affairs in the United States. In 1919 the electric furnaces of America made the same proportion of the country's steel output as in 1918

there was a decided gain by the electric process. Ten years ago electric process was responsible for only 1.4 per cent, of the total output. It is significant, not poly that the demand for electric steel did not fall off in the first year after the war, but that the use of electric-alloy castings increased sharply, indicating a tendency to
usa heat treated aller castinga in place of forgings for many engineering purposes. KRUFPS.
The report of the Krupp works, published recently, shows with what extraordinary rapidity and success this firm bas transforme ed itself from a war to a peace footing. The report deals with the year 1919-20 and shows that a gross profit of 195 million marke, £636,000 at present gatea; of exchange, was made asota- pared with 112 million, až pro- ximately £500,000 at the rate, pilk 1918. The net profit for 1910 20) was 791% million marks, £318,000 as compared with less than 20 millions (ahout £100,000) in 1918- 19. In spite of the large profits, the directors, in view of the hard times which, they foresee, have decided to carry this profit over to a special reserve and to de- elare no dividend. The report points out that in consequence of the Treaty of Versailles this is the first occasion for the last two generations on which no war material has been manufactured in the Krupp works. It states further that the transformation of the technical factories into pre-war pacific purposes ant Their adoption of a new line of busin ss has been further developed. The number of em- ployees at the end of the year amounted to 91,269, of whom 50,000 lived in Essen alone,
