Although William T. Tilden has played tennis most of his life, he did not rise to national pro. minence until 1918, when he won the national clay-court ohampion ship and was ranked No. 2 in the Gratton. That year Tilden went to the finals in the all-comars at Forest Hills but beaten by R. Lindly Murray for the title. Murray was rated No. T'as the result of his victory.
