DEATH OF THE OLDEST MEMBER OF LLOYD'S. Very deep sorrow and regret were expressed at Lloyd's on receipt of the sad news of the death of Mr. Leonard-Charles Wakefield, which occurred at Westbourne-terrace, Hyde Park, London, in his 89:1 year. The late Mr. Wakefield was elected an annual subscriber to Lloyd's. in 1854, and an under- writing member in. 1859, and his death has thus severed a con-1 nection with Lloyd's which had extended for over 65 years. The deceased gentleman served on the committee of Lloyd's for a number of years, and he held the

OIL THE FUEL OF THE FUTURE.

Sir James McKechnie, manag- ing director of Vickers Naval. Construction Works, speaking on the occasi on of the launch of the Anglo-American steamer Nor-Telephone No. 35. ragansel, at Barrow, said this ship they had just seen put into. the water was not only an oil carrying crafty but she would be propelled by oil, which was the fuel of the future. Engineers were satisfied that oil is the fuel for all ships in the future, and commercial

men were also justified in considering where there is an adequate and available good accommodation for First Class Passengers. Electric Light and Regular Service of Fast, High Class Coast Steamers having supply at economical prices. A Fans in state-rooms and Seloon and Excellent Cuisine.

But this, was by no means a record. At the same time they had in store within oar land 300,000 tons of oil. Thus their enterprise was an assurance that the com-, mercial men might well give full encouragement to the engineer in connection with the use of oil for ship propulsion. Long! research in Messrs. Vickers works, extending over 15 years, and involving a sum of money of over £140,000, had not only) forced them to the conviction that oil fuel was the more efficient than coal, but further that the was more economically employed in the internal com-, bustion engines than as fuel in the steam boilers.
