FIFTY YEARS) SERVIE An interesting gathering took! place in the offices of the City Line. Glasgow. recently, when Captain James Black, the marine superintendent, was the recipient of presentations on the occasion of his having, ben for over fifty years with the firm, also of his golden wedling. Mr. W. S. Workman, on behalf of the firm. presented Captain Black with a piece of plate, while Captain Eliot, of the steamir City of London, presented from the sea. going staff a waller of Treasury notes. Captain Black suitable acknowledged the gifts.
BRITISH SHIPPING SUPREMACY.
London, Dec. 31.-The opera- tions allocated to the British for the clearance of all moured mines in Home waters, and the Mediter- ranean and Aegean Seas have ben completed. Cer.ain Black Sea ports have also been cleared. A hundred German ships, most of them interned in South America and many of them exceeding 10.000|| tons, remain to be handed over to the Allies, beyond the 250 already] surrendered and provisionally dis- tributed among the shipping conpans. This distribution and British shipbuilding activity have re-established the supremacy of British shipping which at present has 5 per cent. mora tonnage than before the war, although it is still
short of its requirements.
SEATTLE'S NEW PIER. Seattle is building what shipping authorities declare will be the larges: com- mercial pier in the world. This enterprise will cost $2,500,000 and will be ready for use by May 1, 1920. The new terminal will be known as Smith Cove Pier B. It will be 2.559 feet feet long and 365 feet wid. Eleven ocean- going vessa's will be able to dock at one time along this pier. The first transit shet will be 500 feet long and 120 feet, wide, but: eventually the wharf will have two transit sheds. 1,000 feet long by 120 feet in with. At as port on the seven sens is there a commercial pier as large as this, according to officials of the Seat- de Port Commission. The Sub- structure of the terminal is 80 percent completed and the rock rip-rap work is 60 percent Bnished. The new Seattle shipping terminal not only will be equipped with
the most modern devices for. handling, cargo, but will have passenger accomodation, wait- ing rooms and landing stages. Work on the fill beneath the centre of the wharf, which will require 645,000 cubic yards of earth, is progressing rapidly- with only 5,000 cubic yards more to be placed. The new pier will be practically a duplicate of the Fort Commission's present Smith Cove Pier A, but consider- ably longer. The Port of Seattle now has upwards of $13,000,000 invested in deepwater piers, transit sheds, grain elevators, cold storgage plants and other ocean terminal facilities, all of which are publicly owned and operated. Each month the opera- tion of these facilities shows a profit, so that no tax levies against property bolders of Seattle are necessary to maintain these ter minals,
