DECEMBER

1919.

IN CANADA,

VOTE „VICTORY" IN ONTARIO,

Papers to band from Canada confirm Dr. McGillivray's fore- cast at the meeting of the W. C. T. U. some weeks ago. The [result of the referendum in Ontario is a triumph for the drys" even in the cities where the "wets" have their strong- holds. From 62 to 70 per cent. voted “no” on all four questions submitted to the people.

The following are the figures Question one Are you in far- our of the repeal of the Ontario Temperance Act?

Yes, 223,874; No. 508,309, Ma- jority, 284,935. Percentage of "drys," 70.

Question two-Are you in favour of the sale of light bear containing not more than two and fifty-one one hundredths per cent. alcohol, weight measure, through Government agencies?

Yes, 245,802; No. 479,511. Majority, 233,709. Percentage, 67. Question three-Are you in favour of the sale of light beer containing not more than two and fifty-one one hundredths per cent. in alcohol, weight measure, standard hotels in local mun- icipalities that by a majority vote favour such sale?

Yes, 235.192: No. 493,887. Majority, 258,695. Percentage, 63. Question four-Are you in favour of the sale of spirituous, and malt liquors through Govern- ment agencies?

Yes, 277,580. No. 453,245 Majority, 175,665. Percentage, 62.

The official figures show that Ontario remains dry by more than a two to one vote of the people and that Toronto voted "no" on all four questions.

The returns indicate that the fourth question was the stumbling black for many who would other wise have given a straight four:

No mandate to the coming legislature to do away with liquor. Ail double as to the dryness of the vote in Toronto were dispelled when the official figures of the entire city (with the exception of

a few sub-divisions) were given out as follows;

Question 1-Yes. 79,281; No. 106,188.

Ottawa voted dry on all ques- tions, Ottawa east gave a majority for the "wets," but this was over- come in Ottawa west.

Hamilton also gave a majority against the repeal of the Ontario Temperance Act.

A

Prohibition carried all four questions: in

and Brockville throughout Leeds county, ques- tion one being carried by majority of 8,090, question two by 7,492, question three by 8,070, and question four by 6,176. Total vote polled was 16,542.-

Winnipeg prohibitionists are jubilant over the overwhelming victory for temperence in Ontario, and assert that the-rote in the eastern province foreshadowe the result of a referendum on the liquor question in Manitoba.

"It was the first chance an English-speaking province has had to vote on the question of mild alcoholic beverages," said Rev. D. B. Harkness, secretary of the Social Service Council of Manitoba, "and the result clearly S OWE their attitude. I am certain that the result in Ontario is a clear indication of what will bappen in every other province in Canada when the question is put to a vote of the people."

GENERAL NEWS.

QUEUES FOR POUNDS OF COAL.

The coal famine in Paris is so severe that all the coal merchants have closed thier doors "until further notice." and coal tickets are so much waste paper. A hundredweight of coal was seen to te carried into a coal merchant's premises (says Reuter), and im- mediately a long queue of people formed up in the hope that it might be distributed a few pounds at a time. This has in fact, bean done in several of the pourer quarters.
