ONE EFFECT OF PROHIBITION. One curious phase of the great drought in the United States is the number of wealthy citizens that prohibition is driving to reside abroad where the aridity is less pronounced. From the Passport Bureau there comes a story of 50 persons who have taken out passports to Havana, who in filling in the applications put "Prohibition" in the column headed "Reason for making journey,"
A DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER. Commandant Bruyere, Chief of the French Police at Tientsio, who has seen much distinguished service at the Front, and Eas been decorated with the highest honours, has returned to Tientsin. The Band of the Chinese Police, a detachment of the French Municipal Police, and leading officials of other Police forces, together with a large number of personal friends greeted him, at the East Station.
A CATCH.
An amount of excitement un- usual for a Sunday afternoon was observed on the Shanghai Bund recently. A small crowd began to gather near the Customs Jetty, and very soon numbers could be. seen sprinting hard to join it and get their share in whatever fun was going. It was, however, a
ness, for the sole cause of the gathering was a Chinese fisher who had just caught a small fish.

There are about 800 blind people in Kobe, and they are ostly shampooers and teachers of Japanese music. They have just established a society of their own. The opening ceremony was held fecently and more than 200 blind people were present, besides a number of guests. It was decided to send a petition to the Minister of Education urging him to make compulsory educa- tion applicable to the blind as well as to others."
REFUSING SILVER.
The Chinese up country have the reputation of being hoarders of silver, contributing to some extent thereby to the high price of the metal. At the same time it is rather strange to find the people of the neighbourhood of Wuhu refusing silver, and insist- ing in payments being made in copper. This was the experience of two Hongkong gentlemen who were on a shooting trip there a few days ago, though for fear of misapprehension it ought to be mentioned the silver the Chinese refused was subsidiary coinage.
P.C.'S SONG IN COURT.
A policeman was called upon to sing at Tottenham Police Court recently. Three ex-soldiers had been heard singing a song know as Mademoiselle rom Armen- tieres," and were consequently. charged with using insulting words. But Mr. Green, one of the magistrates, said he did not know the refrain, whereupon one of the men suggested that the constable should sing it.
This the officer stoutly refused to do, but on being pressed by the magistrate. and prisoners alike, gave the soldier's parody in sub- dued tones... The words "Armen- tieres" and "Rhine" were the only ones audible, and one of the accused men observed that the two places were many miles apart. But, having heard the song, the magistrate was satisfied, and tell- ing the man that he was not in court to listen to geography, im- posed fines of 20s.

THE BECKETT FIGHT,
Carpentier beat Beckett.
London, Dec. 4.
Later.
Beckett was knocked out in the first round.
Carpentier led with a left to the jaw. Beckett hardly got a good punch home before he was floored. He fell with & tragic thud and there was never any chance of his rising again within the time. When the tea records had expired there was a terrific roar of cheering which had no: subsided when Beckett returned to consciousness. He seemed quite unaware of what had happened. The whole bout did not exceed two minutes.
The first and final round has been described:--Carpentier rusted and get home & left to Beckett's head. This was a light blow. Then Beckett tried for a body blow. Carpentier feinted with his left and then brought his right hard to Beckett's jaw, knocking him out.
After the fight, Carpentier was carried round the fing shoulder high. The Prince of Wales, who was present, shook hands with both winner and loser. The duration of the fight was cffcially returned as seventy-four seconds. The news of the result caused great excitement among the members of the House of Commons who deserted the House during a speech by Churchill.
