PREMIER AND LIBERAL PARTY.

London, Dec.. &.

Mr. Lloyd George, in a speech at Manchester to the members of the Retorm Chib, addressing the gathering as fellow Liberals, pointed out that conditions within the Liberal party had been distressing during the past three years. His separation therefore pained hire,, deeply in the reasons affecting the whole country, made a split imperative though there was no disazrevat on questions of principle. He had done his utmost to avert the split but would have been a traitor if he had acted otherwise than he did because he be lieved that unless a new spirit was imparted into the war ti...... Cavendish apparatus" for deter- mining the earth's density. He has, further-morg, reversed the attraction of gravitation into re- pulsion, more powerful than the attractive force itself. It requires very delicate instruments to take the measurements, but Professor Nipher declares he has detected daily increase and decreases of the suspended balls due to the daily variation in the earth's electrical potential.

Long, before Professor Nipher began his experiments it had been suggested by scientists that what we know as gravitation may bɔ the effect of electricity. It had also been imagined that if this theory were ever proved to be correct, the weight of bodies would be found to be dependent on the number of electrical units they contain. This is the amazing hypothesis. which Professor Nipher's experiments seem to be demonstrating.

If it is true, then the laboratory has begun a conquest of nature which may place man in control of the great force which guides the destinies of the celestial bodies. It is, of course, a far stretch of the imagination

POCKET WIRELESS,

NEW REGULATIONS.

research

Although wireless work can now be taken up again by the amateur, a Daily Chronicle representative was informed re- cently by the surpervisingofficials of the Government department | concerned that; "owing to

the rapid strides made in the use of small installations since 1914, the regulations are increased and more stringent.

The most important point in the new regulations is that: "Thermionic valves shall not be ased without the special authority of the Postmaster-General." ..

"This is the same instrument which has been used in wireless telephony." explained an official at Marconi House. "By its means messages can be received and transmitted, and it is because of this latter point probably that the authorities are naturally cautions. In the hands of an irresponsible person their use might become dangerous.

SO

"Aerial sets allowed give plenty of scope. A message could be received from Nauën in Germany or from the United States, pro- vided modern gear was used.

"A great deal of scientific knowledge and use can be derived from small sets, by the amateur, and the Marconi Company is now concentrating upon plans for the production of various kinds of 'pocket' sets of low power suitable for amateurs. We are developing this along certain lines, with the object of putting on the market la small up-to-date scientific in- strument which could be fired up in any private garden and give endless scientific amusement.

"Potentialities of the thermionic valves are by no meanscomplate-. ly developed, and although certain obstacles stand in the way, our staff is developing its uses now. One of these sets, about the size of a piano, can transmit a mes- sage 1,900 miles, so sensitive is the instrument."
