NOVEL GIFT TO F.Q'S SISTER.

A piano, a music case, and instruction books for a pianoforte learner, bare been presented on her 14th birthday to, the only sister of Jack Cornwall, V.C., by Mr. T. C. MacCormack, of North- ampton, out of the proceeds from the sale of his book, “Lieut. John Travers Cornwall, V.C."

58 DEGREES OF FROST. Lieut. Weiss and his mechanic Beque recently flew up to a height over 9,000 metres, the actual climb only taking 53 minutes. They encounted a temperature of 32deg. centigrade (59 degrees of frost Fahrenheit). The altitude given is more than that of the bigbest mountain in the world.

FIGS HELD UP TILL ROTTEN. A typical example of food pro- fiteering has been reported to the Paris Prefect of Police by Muni- cipal Councillor Emile DesvBUZ, who says that 1;130 tons of figs have been lying in a Paris ware- house since May and are now rotten and unfit for food. The consignment changed bands four or fiva tines, and Councillor Desvaux.suggests that a prosecu- tion should be instituted for the offence known as putting the necessaries of life out of circula- tion.

Cars.

MINISTERS GIVE UP CARS. Ministers of the Crown. Mr. Bonar Law informed Colonel Walter Guinness in the House of Commons recently, had decided to give up at once the use of motor-cars hitherto allotted to them. The Government had further decided that no should be personally allotted to anyone. A certain number of: cars were necessary for the service of the departments, and these will be used for Govern-i ment service only. The number of cars had already been greatly reduced, and steps were being taken to effect a further reduct- ion.

ELECTROCUTED IN BATH.

While taking an electric bath at his house at Leigh (Lancs), Mr. Walter Eckersley, a well- known cotton spinner, was electrocuted. In attempting connect a battery and a cable attached to an electric pendant, it is believed that the cable fell into the water. This gave him a severe shock. He became un- conscious, and died later. His chauffeur went to his assistance, but, in wrenching the appliance from his employer. sustained severe electric shocks. Mr. Eckersley was a director of the Fine Cotton Spinners' Association and Leigh Brewery.

GIRL'S ORDEAL

Terrified by the conduct of a man riding in the same railway carriage, a little girl of twelve years opened the door of the com- partment and got out on the foot- board, to which she clung until rescued by the driver of the train. The story of her terrible ordeal was told at Brynmawr Police Court, where James Keogh, a married collier, of Govilon was summoned for interfering with the comfort of a passenger. The engine driver stated that when trävelling between Brynmawr and Blaenavon he noticed a little girl standing on the footboard. Realising her danger, he pulled up the train and ran to her assistance. When he got to her she jumped into his arms, crying bitterly, and made a complaint of the behaviour of the prisoner. Superintendent Williams stated that there were a number of previous convictions against the prisoner, and he was sentenced to
