TREASURE TRACED IN ASIA.
All treasure stories wield tremendous fascination for the majority of people, but there is one which has held the imagina- tion of sludost all Asia in thrall far six conturies, and its spell ¡to-day is 1 greater than ever.
"When we take into considera- tion," says Chamber's Journal, the gold, silver, and jewels lying in the graves of kings, and em- perors long dead, the valuables concealed in the ruins of the cities of Central Asia buried under the white desert sand, where but five hundred years ago all was green and life weat on busily, and the treasure left in forgotten mountain temple, Central and Southern Asia may be said to be the tomb of lost millions.
of
The greatest and most famous of these reputed treasure hoards is that buried in the tombs of the great khans or emperors of the Mongols that formidable milit-
race which poured out! middle Asia early in the thirteenth century. and ravaged Eastern and Central Europe from Danzic, on the Baltic, to the Adriatic. Now, during the past few years many large precious stanes, including tur quoises from the Syr Daria-one of Central Asia's great rivers, where turquoises were obtained for the Court of the khans-to- gether with thirteenth and four- teenth century Asiatic ornamente, rare jewellery, and pieces of, Tartar-worked gold, have been coming out of the State of Nepaul into Indian bazaars, without any adequate explanation as to their
source.
"Some years ago a few similar articles of ancient Asiatic work- manship and a quantity of rubies and other precious stones were sold in Bokhara by two men of Yarkand, and passed ultimately into the collection of the Tsar of Russia. In each instance the, goldwork sad the precious stones came from the long-lost tombs of, the osce mightly khans of the Mongols, for the two men of Yarkand had chanced on the place of sepulchre and treasure.
The story they related, as rouched for by Russian authori ties in Bokhara, reads like a chapter out of the Arabian Nights Entertainment." The two men belonged to a caravan trading between Yarkand and the towns that fringe the great desert of salt and sand that forms part of Eastern Turkestan. They soon quarrelled with the headsman, however, and set out on their, return to their native place- Yarkand.
**On the fourth morning
they lost the track among the defiles of the mountains, "and after wandering for two days they happened on a trail that was hewn out of the solid rock, and was only wide enough for two men to pass abreast. After trz- velling for some time along this found it led them into "a little, deep and gloomy defile, they
rocky, and valley. Here they saw a number of huge images in a row before a heavily sculptured [doorway. Beyond the square jopen portal lay a cavern, in which was a series of tombs, each filled with many objects of immense value. They averred that they saw of precious stones alone 'more than sixty camels could carry.
"The two traders brought off as much treasure as they could carry, but had to throw practical- ly all of it away in the effort to save their lives before they found succour and regained the caravan route to Yarkand. They made careful observation of the trail, however, and left heaps of stones to mark it. On reaching their native town they resolved to sell. the few remaining articles in Bokhara, where a higher price was obtainable than in their native town, and after a few days proceeded to that city by way of Kashgar and Khodjend, taking advantage, for safety's sake, of a caravan going thither. Here, in Bokhara, that most picturesque) town of Central Asia, they came in contact, when in the bazaar. with, an adventurous Englishman, H. Spaulding, who for some years.

THE BALTIC STATES.
Helsingfors, Oct. 10. message from Reval says the situation in Riga is unchanged since Friday night The town was considerably damaged by bombardment and parts are in ruins. An enemy attempt to cross the bridge was repulsed. There were many civilian casualties by hostile aircraft. Lettish troops remain on the right bank of the Dwins, deciding to await for assistance Bermondt's forces are advancing on a broad front between the Dwins and the gulf
A North-West Russian communique says: Tanks enabled the troops to cross the Lugar River in the vicinity of Yam- burg.
Copenhagen, Oct. 12.
A message from Helsingfors says: An Allied squadron accompanied by many Esthonian ships left Reval on 10th Oct. for the Gulf of Riga, presumably taking Esthenian troops to assist the Letts." A message from Berlin says: Fifty thousand Lettish troops are landing at Libar with the help of British warships and are expected to be employed in a Bank attack on Bermondt's army.

An Esthonian commanique says: We captured Yurhino and Lufa A detachment of Russians captared Tamburg.
Paris, Oct. 19.
The Allies reply to the German note with regard to evacuation of the Baltic Provinces says: It is difficult not to believe that the German Government's delay in ordering. the evacuation is not deliberately arranged in order to make the execation of the order practically impossible. It is apparently really impossible to explain it otherwise. Its refusal to recall Yon der Goltz suggests that Von der Goltz was sent to the Baltic States to complete the organisation which now enables the German Government to plead that the German troops in the Baltic States do not recognise its authority. If Yon der Goltz has acted contrary to his in- structions he ought to have been punished. Failing satis actory explanations therennent the Allies are unable to admit the German Government's contention that it has done all in its power to withdraw the troops. After refer- ring to the attack on Riga and the formation of a German- Russian Government in Courland the Allies' reply declares -hat the Allies uphold the principle of the German Govern- ment's entire responsibility in regard to carrying out the evacuation and intend to maintain entirely all the coercive measures mentioned on 9th Sept. as long as evacuation has not been finally undertaken and carried out with all desirable speed. An Allied Commission, headed by a General, will be sent to control the execution of the measures for the evacuation. Suspension of coercive measures cannot be considered until this General has informed the Supreme Council that evacuation is proceeding normally. The Ger- man Government is requested to reply as soon as possible and the Allies will hold it responsible for any act of hostility by German troops against the Allied representatives in the Baltic Provinces.
The Temps" Berlin correspondent says Von der Goltz has undertaken that his troops shall evacuate the Baltic States, including the Bischof Detachment which joined the army attacking Riga.
A telegram bearing Wednesday's date has been re- ceived in Paris from the Lettish Government at Riga stating that not only has Germany done nothing, despite official afirmation to withdraw her army, but to double the military forces in Courland, commit many crimes and acts of violence against Lettish institutions or citizens and attack Lettish forces. Warrants for the arrest of Germaa officers and soldiers guilty of crimes during the cecupation have been issued by the court martial sitting at Lille. One of these warranta is made out in the name of Count Bismarck, a grandson of the Iron Chancellor, who is accused of marder and incendiarism. His extradition will be demanded from the German Gorernment.-Haves.
