MR-GEORGE BARNI

LABOUR'S CHAR

PROBEEMS TO BE DISCUSSED.

Mr. George Barnes, M. F. recently returned to London after five months' work in Paris. It has been a time of stress and strain, but Mr. Barnes came back looking fresh and hearty, and ready for any work, which-may befall him during the great task of reconstruction which Hes before the British Government.

Not the least important of the provisions of the Treaty of Ver- sailes are those which set up the great International Charter of Labour, and for the inception and carrying out of this great work Mr. Barnes is mainly responsible, Mr. Lloyd George gave a definite pledge to Labour that it abould be represented upon the British Peace Delegation, and that pledge) has been fulfilled. No honestar or more independent represen- tative could have been found than this working engineer, who has taken his place, and justified his sélection, among the statesmen of the world.

With characteristic modesty, Mr. Barnes disclaims all the credit for the new International Labour Charter. "I think same- thing, ought to be said for those who worked with me and for Sir David Shackleton, the Permanent Secretary of the Labour Ministry." be, suggested to a representative of the Daily Chronicle. But he admitted that it was owing to an interview he gave to our representative last year that the matter had obtain

Mr. Justice Reilhache, in responding to the roast of “The Bench,"

If that letter bore fruit he was quite willing to put up with the expose of the poverty from which Judges were suffering. (Laughter.) There were "other letters in the Greek alphabet besides Quicga, and if some of those present should be inclined

in which business was conducted in the Courts to-day. The great desire of the modern Judge was to arrive at the real facts of the case, and to give judgment in accordance with what he believed to be the rights, of the case. There was a great change in the relationship between the Bench and the Bar. They were much more friendly. There did not seem to be that great gulf fixed that there had been before, and altogether the junior barrister now had a very much better time than when he was a junior: himself.
